Shadow DPS testing results - interested if others are seeing the same

Mana is a major concern, and Imp Spirit Tap is a huge part of addressing it, from what I've seen so far in my testing.

I've heard the analyses that say that the nukes aren't a dps increase to use, but consider this: we now have an increased critical bonus on nukes, but most shadow priests are still geared much like they were pre-3.0, with low crit compared to other casters. To me this seems it could be a major reason why many people are seeing minimal or no dps increase from using the nukes. With higher crit chances from gear and the increased critical bonus on nukes (which does not apply to DoT crits), I'm predicting that nukes will continue to be worth it even setting aside the huge mana regen from Imp Spirit Tap.

In the meantime... MOAR TESTING! Gives me something to do tonight... if the damn server ever comes back up. -.- I'll try out removing nukes from my rotation and see what that does, given that my gear's pretty crit-heavy. I may even swap back into some of my pre-3.0 gear and see how much that changes the result.

So when the servers finally came back up, I hit the dummies.

My first run or two with just DoTs and Flay were really high, and I was about to incredulously admit that even with normal caster gear the nukes didn't add dps. I kept going, though, and there ended up being a pretty high sample variation; later runs were showing DoTs/Flay at much lower than rotations using my nukes.

Conclusion: Damnit, I'm gonna have to put that Biostatistics course to use and do some legitimate math on this. >.<

So... I noticed that they snuck in a stealth nerf on us (or maybe I've just been oblivious up till now :P ) Apparently replenishment will ONLY proc off of MB now, so numbers or not, if you want the regen, MB's gotta stay in and on CD. :\ It's even in the tooltip now...

Yeah, it was announced, but not in a major way.

I think though that the key with Replenishment is you need to keep popping Mind Blast if you want the raid benefit in place. From what Dae was saying, Imp Spirit Tap works just fine for your personal mana pool without having to deal with Replenishment going off.

The replenishment from VT was only ever caused by mind blast... What they fixed was that it was procing off everyone's mind blast, so some raids would just run with 1 shadow priest, and all the other healing priests would just have to mind blast the target every now and then and trigger additional replenishments. That's what they fixed and updated in the tooltip.

You say that like replenishment existed before 3.0.

Pretty sure that Brylee didn't know that. And actually, it was changed to Mind Blast only at one point or another in Beta; originally it was SW:D, Mind Flay, and Mind Blast.

Yeah, sorry, I still think of replenishment as being the way that VT used to regen mana, where it procced off any shadow damage :P I must learn to get with the times :)

Right, I meant the fix that came in 3.0.whatever just before Wrath release.
