FFXI for 3 days - hated it. Warcraft from the day it came out. And - doesn't exactly count, but Second Life since early 2004. That be it! --

Previous to WoW, I was an MMO virgin. Started playing about 6 months prior to the release of BC. Closest things to an MMO I've played previous would be L.O.R.D. (Legend of the Red Dragon for you young'ns) in the much simpler times before the internets and it's crazy, crazy tubes. More recently (about a year before I started WoW) Kingdom of Loathing. I still log into KoL once in a while to see what's new, and ocasionally I'll seek out a telnet BBS and play some L.O.R.D. to remember the good old days. heh --

Queen of the Brood of Moonves |
The only real MMO I've ever played has been WoW. I used to LARP (Vampire: the Masquerade!) and play Starcraft as well, but that was the extent of my gaming right there for a long time.

Probably nothing new here ... :) UO - my first love, from about a month after it opened. EQ EQ2 AC AC2 AO EVE COH/COV SWG (I concur with Maegrette, FU SOE!) Guild Wars Planetside (way cool, but it's Sony - may have to try it again though) Jumpgate (beta) Tabula Rasa (beta, and trying the free trial again at the moment - and who knows, I may get to launch my DNA into space) Second Life (a bit) NWN persistent worlds (though I contend that NWN just wasn't meant for persistant worlds, it's too much like regular D&D to have your wizard running around by himself). Hellgate: London (if it counts) Diablo and Diablo2 (if they count) Vanguard (beta) And of course WoW, if you hadn't guessed ... :) Of them all, I think UO is my favorite skill based MMORPG (I had the luck of ages when it came to PKs, I got attacked a total of a dozen times, and three of those times were RP events anyway ... :). I helped run a tavern on the Chesapeake server called the Duir Tavern that became one of the big RP centers after the Oasis Tavern collapsed due to issues with the owner's account. SWG had a shot, but Sony had been taking a little too much of the LSD. WoW is probably my favorite achievement/class based MMORPG. It's pretty much done right what all of it's predecessors (and attempted successors, to date) can't manage to pull off quite as well. I'd LOVE to see what Blizzard could do if they tried to do UO right - but UO is probably more niche than a WOW/EQ type game. Planetside was way cool, though I ended up quitting it for things like Battlefield which tended to be a little slicker and have fewer latency issues if you found a good server. Though I do miss the huge battles. Tabula Rasa I don't think really counts, even though it has some of the feel - you're still running around questing, fighting NPCs, etc, rather than just running battles against other players. --

My only MMO experience has been in Star Wars Galaxies - Jackrabbit Bothan Creature Handler/Carbineer. I probably would still be playing if they hadn't removed (not nerfed, REMOVED!) the creature handler class from the game. But all thing being equal, now that I've done WoW I like it alot better. Though there are times when I miss my Tie Interceptor. |
