I'm trying to build up my gear a bit, and right now I've got around 60 badges, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to pick up.

Right now I've got 1770 +heal and 556/203 mp5 with MotW.

The options I'm looking at are the offhand, the ring, the leather gloves, the shoulders, or the MH (with about 3 weeks of saving).

Currently my socketing has been driven by redundancy for limited numbers of slots, so there are no pure +heal gems.

I have enough arena points (my partner has not been playing since S4 started) that I can get the offhand or the gloves even if my rating is sub 1100 in 2v2's in two weeks. These have the benefit of being high in +heal, int, and sta (a stat I feel I need a smidge more of), and in the case of the gloves have a good chunk of MP5 to make up for a lack of spirit (although it doesn't scale with kings.)

This is where it might seem like I'm telling you how to play. Please take in faith that I understand everyone has their own playing styles and that I respect everyone's choices. :)

Having said that!

If you're playing as a tree (which I suspect you are) you're going to want to get out of your head that mp5 is the way to go. Spirit will trump mp5 during raids *and* give you a bonus healing. There's really no other stat more important for my leafy friends than healing and spirit. (This will remain tree until the xp hits).

Innervate is still spirit based, as well. During raids my spirit can hit upwards of 800. For fights requiring massive heals, I can literal hit 0 mana, cast innervate, and cast Healing Touch for the duration of innervate and end up at 90-100% mana. That can't be beat by any other class ;P

If you plan on raid healing as a tree, look into upgrades that provide healing and spirit. If you plan on pvping more than pveing look into healing and int (along with stam and resil, duh). The difference is you're rarely going to want to branch out in pvp -- it's too easy to be CCed and reduces your movement. On the other hand, you'll rarely want to be out of tree form during raids.

Here's a good reference with numbers and math for the more curious. http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t17783-druid_raiding_tree/

Lastly, beware your weapon choices. The Gavel *seems* like a pretty nifty item but it seriously reduces your ability to maximize your spirit. Unlike paladins and shaman, trees get no benefit (other than mana) from the sweet int on the mace. My suggestion is that you hold off on the badge mace and take the prince's mace or one of the healing staves (of the 5 available, 3 have really nice spirit). I prefer the prince's mace simply because it opens a slot for more spirit from my offhand. :) My next upgrade will be the Life Staff from Solarian (hopefully).

Great Healing Staves for Druids:

Anyway, I hope this helps you make your decision! Take what you want from the post and put the rest on a shelf :)

Hehe, I adore spirit. Very LITTLE of my gear has any mp5 on it, and none of it intentionally. And I'm very familiar with the tree thread on EJ, but there's sort of a lack of minutiae about gear preference. And a lot of that comes down to style. I'm just more curious about what other people would choose as an upgrade from my current gear.

I've got 535 int and 525 spi atm with mark. So my spirit goes to 704 (I think I'm doing that math right) with draenic wisdom, fish-sticks, spirit buff and kings.

The gavel (which is relatively low on my list)... would get a spirit enchant, but that would put it at an int/sta upgrade but a 1 healing loss from my current mace. As for the staves my current one is the rod of the blazing light, though I've been trying to figure out how I want to socket it.

The pvp offhand is actually the one I'm looking at a little more of the two pvp items. While I would lose 22 spirit (which pains me) it would give 18 stamina, 3 int, and 40 +heal (putting me at around 1810). It also has the benefit of being "free." I would at most want one piece of pvp gear as part of my pve set, since with mark I only have 7700ish health, which is rather low.

I just can never decide on this sort of thing. Especially with so many choices.

The shoulders are potentially a big +heal upgrade too, but a slight spirit downgrade. And it would break the malorne 2piec, which is a good bonus. As I said, all my current gems are healing/int or healing/spirit. So I'm missing some nice +heal bonuses. But there's still the argument that what, 4 spirit is the same as 11+heal?

Well, if you have large amounts of gold to burn, and by large, I mean crazy large amounts of gold to burn. I can make http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34372

The mats are insane, but so are the gloves.

Yeah... unfortunately two reasons that won't work. First is that I'm saving for the epic flying. Second is my current main needs to have the rogue version of those made. Luckily, I can get sunmotes from my guild bank, unluckily they'll cost points. Which is a lead I want to maintain since I am second in line for glaives* and the person in the lead is going to be likely absent this week because of a hurricane... I'm also first in line for the carapace of sun and shadow pattern >_>

*note: There are two warriors between that rogue and myself. But they are permanently prot (never go dps) and have said they want them eventually for looks. With one of them planning on being a deathknight in Wrath. If either of them gets the glaive first I have a feeling there would be mutiny >_>;

Well I have the shoulders and MH for my heal set already...and want the other 3! So I guess I'm not much help. However, imo, even w/o spirit the ring is quite good and something you could probably use for a long time. I think it will be my next purchase. While spirit is king a little MP5 doesn't hurt, esp. considering a druid is always casting. And for me, I heal as off-spec so I am not receiving any tree based bonus healing per spirit. Even as a tree that ring has to be high on the list. Based on your stats your MP5 is already quite nice relative to the 1750 heal bonus. So I would not mind trading in some spirit for a high +heal ring.

You may also want to look at the "raiding as a tree" thread on EJ. They have two very nice loot tables to peruse.

Well, I wasn't really talking about rings... sadly, getting a good "druid" ring will be hard :P The badge ring is very nice. AAMOF it's likely one of the best you can get before t6 and on par with the Naruu and SSC rings.

Also, Bosh is right and I hope I didn't come across and saying you should actually *avoid* mp5. While spirit is best for trees, mp5 isn't *harmful* just be careful when looking at something with high mp5 and no spirit because you could be harming yourself. At a certain point, spirit is far better than mp5 with regard to regen (in and out of combat). Still ... if you can find something with both then good for you :D

One of the things you'll want to be wary of is geming. Anyway, you didn't ask about gems, so... yeah :P

*sigh*

*takes things slower*

I have been playing druid for a while... and I know about the stats I need to look for and the balances. Though I admit I've primarily been using "raiding as a tree" for readjusting my casting style to better maintain HOT rotations. However, using the gear list as a guidline isn't quite the same as knowing which would be the best, "most efficient" upgrade to get. Though I have been looking more at the Purple lootrank list than the red one. Also I still disagree with the complete merit of using LBP as a method of ranking gear. It puts a primary emphasis on lifebloom and it's requirements (the 80% LB coeff), which differs from my healing style. I've been far more interested with using LB as a supportive healing measure rather than the primary one. In my rotation LB makes up about half of my healing with regrowth making up about 35%, the rest being a combination of rejuv, swiftmend and tranquility. Because of this I've been gearing and socketing for higher regen combined with a larger mana pool. At this point though, I feel that I've reached a good stable point for int on the whole, and I'm now putting a greater emphasis on +heal with secondary on spirit or haste.

Ok, so mana regen is:
=(0.001+SPI*BASE_REGEN[LEVEL]*(INT^0.5))*5

Base regen level is 0.009327 at lvl 70.

http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t21280-intellect_-_spirit_conversion_ptr_theorycrafting_hq/p3/#post634852

There's a table there linking int and spi mp5 gains.

At this point I need to begin gemming nearly exclusively for +heal/spirit or +heal, since effectively two int is the same as one spi in terms of mp5 gain for me at the moment.

Also, I'm going to use the assumptions from http://www.resto4life.com (The Mana regen series) that 4 spi is the same as 11 healing and 1mp5 is around the same as 4 +heal.

So loose approximations
1 spi = 2 int = 2.75 heal = 1.45 mp5

So with that i can sort of assign Spirit Equivalent Points (SEP) to the pieces I'm looking at getting relative to what I have.

Gloves:
  • current=77.23
  • badge=99.27
  • pvp=71.12

Offhand:
  • current=45.23
  • badge=55
  • pvp=39.77

Shoulder:
  • current=86.77
  • badge=91.63
  • t5=92.73

Ring:
  • current=31.37
  • badge=41.09

Mainhand:
  • current=198.86
  • badge +heal=212.18
  • badge +spi=202.73

Under that system I should get the gloves because they're a 22 SEP upgrade...

I haven't done as much number crunching on druid healing ( first off, my druid is feral most of the time and I do enough of that for my mage) but I can tell you that haste (and thereby a lowered GCD) is very powerful for a class that relies primarily on HoTs. The tradeoff is the new Wrath talent Gift of the Earthmother reduces the GCD for you on two of the spells it for which it matters the most.

Now I've been a bit fortunate on healing drops since we rarely have more than 1 resto druid in the raid so I'm sitting around 150ish haste rating (including 2 Blessed Bands of Karabor which, even without spirit, are insanely good healing rings) and the haste has bumped up my HPS considerably. Intuitively this makes sense: HoTs tick for a certain period of time after they are cast so the faster you can cast them (and the more you can maintain in the case of LB stacking) the better off you are.

While I like your 'back of the envelope' SEP calculation, the other important thing to keep in mind when looking at badge upgrades are what other items you might reasonably have access to in the near future. If you're raiding instance X and Boss3 drops a leather healing piece with similar stats, there will be relatively low competition for that piece (compared to say a healing MH weapon) and you might have a good chance to get said piece for LOP instead of badges.

Gift of the Earthmother is a talent that just makes me sort of drool a bit.

Haste is something that I'm still trying to figure out how to quantify. Because I definitely give it slightly more weight than some people do, but it's not something I'm looking to stack massive amounts of or gem for (though apparently you can maintain a large multi-tank rotation with 256 spell haste.)

And the badge vs LOP is another thing I'm weighing. But I think the ones I've picked out are ones that seems to level things out a little. And I'm trying to limit any expectations for potential LOP things to T5/ZA atm. Even though I'm looking at Hyj/BT (which I'm still reticent of based on my health).

Ok, interestingly I played around with my numbers with the spreadsheets from resto4life. For me it looks like 1 mp5 is between 2-5+heal, and 2 spirit is the same as 1 mp5. So being optimistic, 5 heal is the same as 2 spirit.

However, looking at my int-spirit ratios, my intellect buffed is far too close to my spirit, at an almost 1-1 relationship. ALSO, my mana regen is high enough that if I were to innervate myself I'd regenerate my (11k) mana almost twice over >_<.

This highly suggests to me that I should work on my +heal. To the extent that if I weren't constrained to already having 2 yellow (in the form of orange) gems for my meta, I should get at least two pure red gems.

Also I can't run them on my computer system because the hd is write protected. If only I had a jump drive.

Yeah >_>

I have a "brand new" XP machine, so I'd love to do things to it.

But the problem is while my work is pretty lenient on it there have been people let go because of improper computer use. Though usually it's porn or they're just not getting their work done.

Also if it causes a massive virus or load on the network.

edit: yep, not .net framework either
