I just read about a possible 50% crit cap. Anyone know? Wow, I'm just thrilled that I'm actually worried about this. --

At that point you start sacrificing too many stats. I actually used to call it the "crit wall." For rogues the crit wall for gear usually seems to hang at around 35%-ish. It's the same way that it's possible to reach hit cap reasonably early after reaching 70. You just won't necessarily have the best stats for it. There was also this cool thing that I worked out that weapon skill, as it existed, managed to break the hit/crit cap. Since you got both on one stat and also reduced the armor contribution of your target. --

With raid buffs and the proc I'll be at 55% or more crit. Is that last 5% wasted?

Because I forgot to include the hit table. Which is the real explanation and I always keep forgetting that I can't just sling from the hip. Usually it's 100-glancing-dodge-missrate = crit cap. (And the 35% really works more with low hit, expertise removes the dodges) But hunters don't have glancings or dodges. So ours is just 100-missrate. Where miss rates are like resists, blocks, etc... Which is why we have a much higher cap. But, honestly, just make sure the things are in balance. --

really it's a balancing of stats. for instance(s) see below (i'm assuming BM for the below, mainly for the sake of convience) I'm assuming SSC/TK gear level as well hunter A: 1500 AP 40hit 50% crit this hunter will do crap damage. A) they're missing all the time B) they're AP isnt high enough to really take advantage of all those crits. Hunter B: 2000ap 142 hit 20% crit This hunter's average shot will be high, but due to the lack of crit, it won't be on par with the gear level. Need to dump some AP and pick up about 6% crit Hunter C: 1850AP 142 hit 25% crit This hunter will do the best damage out of the above listed. ---------------- if you're survival with 50% crit, you can tone that down to about 40% and get some AP items, and you'll contribute the same boost to the raid. another idea is to take points out of EW and put them elsewhere. --

this is it for a winner! |
There isn't a crit cap in the sense that there's a resil cap or armor cap or hit cap. | |

nope. if your crit is greater than 40% (i think, check the EJ class forums for the actual number), then you can take a point out of Expose Weakness, and put into something else if you desire. Point being that with the amount of critical strikes and how the buff works it will still be up 100% of the time.

Yeah, I'm fairly confident that I'm balanced enough. I'm running agi gems over crit, but for my trinkets I took crit over AP. I have (exactly!) 2000AP with just AotH and am hit-capped. I'm tweaking my gems at the moment; I scoooped up a bunch of Delicate CSs over the weekend. I tried running one point in EW and wasn't satisfied. Can it affect multiple targets at the same time? For example, Hydross: will peripheral MS crits help out any melee on those adds? My other assumption has been putting that point into the trap CD ability, or stings. Is there something I'm underweighting, such as simple increased health? A lot of this is more opinion than formal theory-crafting, which is fine with me. Thanks all for the input! --

You want atleast two points in EW, one isn't going to do the job unless you have a really insane crit rate... like 60-70+ I believe. Yes EW can affect multiple targets at once, I love MS critting on all three and then changing targets to see EW up on three different mobs :) Cheers, E --

Btw in regards to the original question, I suggest reading: Cheeky, check this out for your theory stuff...[/url] To sum up the thread and to take Cheeky at face value (whose opinion on all matters Hunter I take as very substantial) there is no "crit cap" for hunters. Now there is a practical aspect to this as someone else mentions, in that Crit Rating and AP tend to be balanced out in Itemization, and there is the risk that if you go too gung-ho on Crit you could be gimping your AP which the net result is less DPS. But in theory(and until logs and number crunchers tell me otherwise) it is possible to make every shot a Critical hit if the itemization were there. --
