Da Cuch is burning! |
So I see discussions all over the place on this now days. It used to be almost across the board: best DPS pet for a BM hunter is a ravager. Then I saw: no no it's now windserpent. And now folks talking about the upcoming expansion are all lauding the wolf? So as a BM raiding, in current world, what would the best pet bet to add DPS? My cat pet is totaly bugged, donno why, Have a ravager and wind serpent as well...leveling the flying snake currently, actually. Feedbacks please? :) --

Windserpent depends on your crit because of go for the throat. If you have enough crit it can basically keep doing nothing but lightning breath. The reason that people are talking about the wolf for dps is that it will have the ability for some pretty strong combinations. Already it has furious howl. Which is a flat damage (47-57) increase. So it is the only one with the passive ability to buff your damage. Then with the ferocity tree it can buff further. http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?petcalc=0M This combined with the ability to keep itself happy through damage makes it really self-sufficient in raids or while grinding. --

TBD Lead |
Forget about Wrath pets for the time being. First it's still in beta and I expect pets to be in flux for awhile yet, so no sense wasting talk on them save for purely "What If" style conversations. Under the current mechanics, your top 3 damage pets are generally agreed upon as being Ravagers, Cats, and Windserpents. Ravagers and Cats pretty much go head to head and are almost interchangable. Windserpents have a BIG asterisk. The reason is that Windserpents do not kick in as being High DPS pets until the hunter him/herself have certain levels of Critical strike capability in conjunction with the Go for the Throat talent that regens Energy for the pet on Hunter Crits. I'd have to go do some digging but the critical strike ranges to make this happen are in the high 40 percent ranges, and this added damage from the Windserpent being spell based in nature could possibly be impacted by Mob resists as well. There are hunters which make the Windserpent work out for them (for grins I've played with them myself), but by and large the general opinion seems to be for consistant high DPS pets you are better off sticking with the Rav or Cat. The risk with the windserpent is if you get a string of non-crits, not only is your own DPS suffering, you are also now lowering your pet's DPS by a significant chunk as well. While this is true for any pet, the Windserpent suffers more so than ravs or cats due to the high cost of their special attack. There is also the issue of the Windserpent being bugged in that it wants to try and move out of melee range before shooting it's lightning breath. There are macros out there to "fix" this but it does present another hassle for Windserpents. All and all, do some serious reading on TKA about Windserpents and how best to deploy them. Some people swear by them, but a lot of times these are very talented players who know how to min/max extremely well, and also get the most out of macros. --

The question I'm supposed to ask is "What is your crit%?" The rule that's often used is that above 35% crit serpents do more damage than ravagers. It's tied to crit due to the Go for the Throat giving pet focus when you crit. Still, though, I love that windserpents can cast their LB without fully engaging. I'm guilty of repeating myself here, but for me it's fun. But I've also got over 35% crit, so I should be safe from the theorycrafting enforcers. ;) --

Wow, high 40's for WS? I should still be OK... The 'run-away-to-LB' bug is fixed now, at least as far as I've seen. The 'you told me to cast LB at A'lar and I won't forget it' issue is still at large... ...or I could fix my macros BEFORE the raid. --

I know that when I'm fully buffed (coming from 34.5%), without the 5% aura and totem, I break 40% with kings, mark, food and major agility (2% there alone). And according to my wws there was an 11% resist rate on the serpent. --

Putting the O.o in your 'WTF?' |
35%+ crit is what I heard for the wind serpent as well. I still use my kitty for the moment, at least until I get my crit higher. (Unfortunately, due to the way upgrades dropped, I'm 22 ABOVE the damn hit cap... wasted itemization points ftl. *grumble*) Surv winds up having a much easier time hitting that mark because of the UBER AGI talent, but I suspect BM will wind up with higher dps from the pet itself once the crucial crit point is reached. I was never all that impressed with ravagers. I tamed one leveling up, and even after I got its loyalty up, my kitty was still better. Said kitty will probably become my solo/5-man pet once I hit the 35 percent mark, but at the moment, she's still my raid pet as well. ;) --

Of course I'm not counting raid buffed... --
