Things to Consider Before Transferring Servers for LO

I think I've read at least 20 comments about people thinking about transferring to SH so they can get in on this. There are a few things to consider (things I've told other peeps before I'd recommend a transfer to get in):

-Check the Raid Calendar thoroughly.

Remember that all times are PST. If only a couple charters are running when you're available and they look mostly full...you may be disappointed with the results. Utilize the PM feature to ask leads if you could reasonably expect to be slotted.

-Check your expectations.

Don't expect to waltz in and get in on every raid. Persistence pays off, for sure, but instant gratification is pretty rare. If you expect to earn a rep of consistency by showing up for Standby or bringing an alt in a pinch...then you've got the right idea.

-Think Long-Term.

Are you leaving some close friends behind? Bailing on a guild you might wanna return to? Think about how you'll feel in a few weeks or months before you make the investment. We're cool people, but I'd still follow my guild wherever they went because ultimately it's the people that matter (and not the content you're pillaging).

...

That's a few thoughts, I'm sure others have more.

If you're confident with a decision to switch after you've thought about it...don't hesitate to hop in. This place is scalable enough to fit the whole server into (and there's no reason it shouldn't all be here).

Good post. I would just mention that for some people, the hardcore raiding guild style works and that is fine. We of course have charters that are more hardcore and higher end taking down BT and starting SW, but they are in no way comparable to raiding guilds (specifically scheduling and attendance/spec demands in raiding guilds tend to be much more severe).

Putting the O.o in your 'WTF?'
{Note: I am not a lead of any sort, but I am a raider who's been with LO since around the time ST: BA was formed, and I can speak from experience. LO's a great place to be, but it's not a hardcore raiding guild, so some cultural adaptation is likely going to help people who are new here.)

Some other things to consider, for people coming to LO, either as transfers or as people already here on SH:

* Standby: Almost everyone goes through a period of a few weeks where they wind up on standby for almost everything they sign up to raid. This is normal, it's not just you. One thing to note, though, is that many charters make ample use of their standbys, and they DO remember the people who always show up and notify leads that they're available. Even in mid-raid sometimes people lose connection or have emergencies pop up. I'm not saying 'wait by the phone forever', but if you are, say, farming or doing dailies during raid time, it doesn't hurt to let those leads know that even after the raid is full, you're still there. You may even want to notify if you switch to an alt. Try not to be too eager, as the leads have their hands full at raid start, but do be concise, friendly, and approachable.

* What to sign up for: Look honestly at your gear, spec, and all the other things that make for the whole picture. Sign up for the things that will both show your prowess and get you potential upgrades. If you are in t6, you can probably sign up for anything on the calendar, frex.

* Competition: In some roles or classes, there's a LOT of competition. Pure dps classes are usually the worst for this. Realize this when you sign up, and understand that if there are a lot of people signed up for a progression raid, and all of them are in better gear than you, you're likely going to warm the bench.

* Your gear matters: If you are in quest greens and dungeon blues, don't expect to be in BT or Hyjal. Seriously. Sign up for raids where you can perform well in your current gear. It doesn't hurt to sign up for one or two where you're shooting 'high' for your gear, but you should likely not expect to be slotted unless your class/role is very under-represented on that day. One really useful tool for gauging where you fit in the levels of raiding is http://be.imba.hu/ -- look yourself up and check out both the suggestions and the meter of raids where you will perform well. One note: They shoot a little over your gear for performance, IMO, so look toward the midpoint of that meter for an accurate assessment.

* PVP is fine, but it ain't raiding: Note that for most classes/roles, more than a few pieces of PVP gear is going to gimp your overall performance. PVP gear is heavily weighed toward survival, and it's wonderful to use on fights where survival is key -- but on dps races, your mage with >600 spell damage is going to be under-performing. In some cases, pvp gear is close to the best-in-slot, and those are not the cases I mean (example: the hunter arena S3 axe). The pvp blues from the vendors are only going to get you to KZ, really. PVP =/= PVE. Stats that are almost useless in PVP are crucial in PVE, and vice versa.

* Be a padawan: This mostly applies to people newer to raiding. By this, I mean if you're new to LO, talk to the folks you see here as leads, or leading discussions, or being helpful. Watch the LO channel and see who offers advice and is approachable. Ask for advice from people who get slotted regularly about improvements you can make, resources to check out, and so forth. While none of it is gospel, there are some people who are definitely go-to guys for every class and spec out there, who really know their stuff and can offer a wealth of information.

* Group with Lefties whenever you can: Jump on chances to run with LO's members in instances you need or enjoy, for example. These will help get you involved in the community, and if a day comes when you're on SB and one of these folks remembers you well, they will likely speak up to a lead and say, "Hey, of we need to fill that slot, Joeshammy was really good when we did Sethekk with him the other night." People do speak up here often.

* LO is Anarchy: This is a pretty chaotic place. Be sure you're comfortable with the concept and community. If you're thinking of transferring, perhaps you should make an alt on Silver Hand, join our channel, and get to know folks a bit.

I hope this is helpful - and as much as it sounds like a lot to think about, remember: you don't have to apply here, you don't have to stick with any one group of raiders, and you don't have a mandatory schedule.

Mandarus and Szili covered everything I would think of to say, and more, except for one thing:

Silver Hand is a RP server. You don't need to RP or like RP to be here, though you should at least be respectful to the RPers among us. However, we have a different code of conduct from non-RP servers, and most importantly, different naming rules. If your name is "Rickastley" or "Wtfpwnage" or "Randalthor" or "Magebomb", sooner or later someone's going to report you and you'll be forced to change it. The sensible thing to do would be to change it during the transfer process, before the issue comes up.

Another thing to keep in mind if you are considering transferring over. There may just be an influx of people into the LO system, we are able to move and grow.. so granted there are a limited number of charters right now, with more people -- MORE CHARTERS will come with more and varying times and people. So, if you are discouraged about the lack of raids happening during your peak play time... then perhaps you may want to bring up a post here in the general forums about a charter that may be willing to open up with raids at that time.. or just an inquiry.

As was stated several times in the WoW Insider we are a growing community.. the charters present now are not the only ones we'll always have. Also keep in mind there is a charter approval process you'll want to read if a group of people from your server is wanting to come over here and start a base formation for a charter.

I agree with a lot of the posts here in that you should jump over and get to know us a little before you take the deep plunge! We don't want our relationships with a newcomer to be akin to a Las Vegas blitz wedding...

Biggest expectation you should have for LO? HAVE FUN!
Biggest expectation LO should have for you? HAVE PATIENCE!

Most of us cut our teeth as a standby who got yanked in! IT can happen to you! :-) Heck I've gotten in in the middle of raids 'cause someone went linkdead lol

Come visit, hang out, have some of Ook's thistle tea and make sure you wanna move to this den of insanity!

Also, Silver Hand is a rather old server, with a rather large population. The odds that many people will be allowed to transfer over here en mass is... rather low. Blizzard does take a look at server population when handling transfer requests.

I personally would not be opposed to the idea of helping a group of people set something similar to our system, or even a second branch of leftovers, up on another server to accomodate for people who were interested because of the wow insider article. I just doubt that blizzard is going to add a lot of new characters to an already busy server, yet at the same time want to share our LO goodness with those who are stuck on other servers.

Not sure how this idea would go over.... but hey, just a thought.

Silver Hand lost a large chunk of it's population before BC came out. I'm pretty sure it's medium population most days now.

Also tossing this up as a sticky given the influx of new people. Not that I want to discourage any of you new people. Far from it as we are always welcoming toward new folks. I just want you folks to make sure your making an informed decision.=)

Is it PVE or PVP server? I am considering xferring from a PVP server due to many factors and LO seems like a great fit. I am concerned that if I xfer to Silver Hand will be prevent from further transfers to PVP realms in the future if I change my mind. (yes I'm aware of the "cooldown" on Blizz's server xfer spell) :O

It's a PvE-RP server, so I believe once you are here, you can't go to a PvP server in the future.

Your right Fluf. Once you transfer from a PvP server to any PvE server it's a one way trip. They do not allow PvE to PvP transfers.

Is there any actual reasoning behind that decision? I'd always wondered why, but then again, interacting with some people who come from PvP servers, it kind of makes me LOL when they switch to a PvE or RP server without knowing that they can never go back.
