Leotheras Warlock Tank - What to Get?

Hi folks,

IA just recently took their first crack at Leotheras the Blind, and I'm wondering just what would be considered an 'ideal' for tanking the demon phase. Obviously, FR is a huge thing, and it's suggested that I respec Demonology as well for MD (even though I lurv Affliction).

My current spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IVMrVRfpqt0oZxx0xr

What I'm thinking: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IZbxczIizzxsxxx0tr0z

My initial thoughts are that I'd be tapping a lot more, as I usually just have my Imp out to Dark Pact off of as he regens, and Demonology in a raid... eh. No Demonic Resilience, meaning I'd have to watch it like a hawk to make sure the succubus doesn't die. And I don't have any T5 yet to help with that, either.

Gear-wise, though... should I just get the badge FR gear, pull out the felhound, and call it a day?

I've seen a druid tank him with FR gear, and a warlock (whatever the split damage with pet spec is) with a felhound out and around the corner. Healers had to keep an eye on the pet, too, so it wouldn't die. That's all I remember! *ducks head in shame*

From what I saw of IA's attempt, it went very well for a first time. The only issues are stopping DPS like 5 seconds before he changes from demon-human or back.

After raid buffs you should be as close to 365 resist as possible.

Depending on how well geared your healers are you may want to spec for demonology and pull out a felhound.

As for tapping, you'll have a ton of time to lifetap while he's in human form since you'll most likely be running with no Blessing of Salvation and would want to watch your threat anyways.

Aggro is really easy to get as long as you time Curse of Doom and Soulfire and then just Searing Pain spam like mad when it's your turn.

I started out tanking him on my warlock respeccing to Demo/destro every week - Demo down to SL, destro the rest of the way, pretty much. The felhound's good for extra resist, in this case.

However, 365 FR isn't all that fantastically hard to get to, raid buffed, and if you can do it without a felhound, I'd strongly suggest trying cookie-cutter Destro - 0/21/40. My favorite way to tank him thus far is to stay this spec (my usual one) and just have an imp out. With the imp, raid buffs, and happy, happy stamina talents in Demo, I can reach about 15k max HP. The advantage of this approach is that you can still do damage the rest of the instance, and don't have to respec twice a week. ^.^ Wouldn't suggest it if you can't get FR cap and a solid HP pool, though, raid-buffed. (365 FR, 14kish health buffed)

Good FR pieces:
-A'lar quest ring
-Wyrmcultist's cloak
-badge FR pieces (I wear the robe, pants, and gloves)
-Flameheart bracers
-high level green FR neck

You can also up the resistances of these items with the FR head enchant and leather armor kits.

(Reach over 365 FR with FR Aura and Flask of Chromatic Wonder)

I wear the badge hat gemmed for stamina, as well, and use my staff instead of my MH/OH combo. Voidheart Crown is also a good choice.

When you're actually in the fight, whatever you do, don't cast Doom such that it goes off early. >.> Bad things happen. Better to be late and get a Misdirect.

+ Daevia, 70 'lock (happily Affliction again!), and Daelind, 70 rogue

Another option for the FR neck is the one off the Tornheart quests (cipher of damnation) in SMV. It has decent stamina and FR (30 stam, 24 FR) if you don't find something better. There is also the J/C option, which has more FR, but less Stam.

Kevlin and myself (Ornalis) were the Warlock tanks for Leo when AP first started killing him. I'm not sure who does it now, since I'm not available on the nights they might be doing Leo, but it's probably Kevlin ... :)

The gear suggestions so far have been pretty spot on. The badge pieces are hugely useful, you get a solid chunk of stamina and resists from just those four. There's one piece from the blue set that will fit in (the bracer I think it was), the other blue pieces are overridden by the badge set. I might have had one or two other pieces, but with a Fire Resist totem and my felhunter, I got a good free 140 resists right there. I still own enough to get 365 with just my Felhunter though, in case I don't get a pally or shaman in my group, and I might have enough for 365 without the felhunter too, I don't remember (been a while). Never hurts to be prepared, yadda yadda ... :)

Kevlin was and is an affliction lock, and he had no problem tanking. I, as a demonologist, could cheat and get extra resists from my Felhunter and therefore keep up some extra spell damage. I could agro a little harder than he just because I would naturally have more spell crit from the rest of my gear as opposed to an affliction lock's set, but he never had problems holding on (nor on the Striders in the Vashj fight, or the fire chick in the Kael'thas fight, for that matter).

I didn't have the 2pc Tier 5 set bonus yet either, so it isn't really necessary (though obviously won't hurt *loves his 2pcT5*). I think I lost the Felhunter maybe once or twice before I bought it. Typically I'd die first just because of a bad string of failed resists. I found it well worth having him up with Soul Link even with the risk of him buying it. So long as a HoT was kept on him, he was fine.

All in all, it's mostly just having the FR gear and spamming Searing Pain to the best of your abilities. You don't really need to respec for it (Kevlin managed it fine, I managed it fine, and I imagine a Destro lock would do even better than the two of us due to having more fire spell talents). AP has always had disgusting raid DPS for a given level of content, and Kev and I never had a problem keeping ahead. So don't be afraid to be whatever spec you want.

And don't knock Demonology in a raid ... :) You might be surprised ... :)

wot 7of9 said is gud. Respecing isn't absolutely necessary but it certainly helps for the first couple of times.

I won't argue there, having the felhunter buff on me means I don't need as much gear, though that really only means a handful more of other stats I'd be sacrificing. Kevlin was AP's tank when we first took Leo down.

Of course when I first did it I'd forgotten the limit was 365, so I brought enough gear to get something like 470 with the felhunter our ... :)
