MTs and Weapon Speed

Since I got totally own on the Malchazeen thread, is there an optimal weapon speed for us tank types?

The fastest upgrade(s) I am likely to get are the T2 and T3 black smithtng hammers. I had good results with the T1 one at first, but I had significantly fewer complaints about agro one I was using Malchazeen--it makes me nervous to think about going back to a 2.7...

I've never been comfortable with anything above 2.0, and usually like something around 1.7 or 1.8. I did use a 1.5 long ago but found it simply too fast. this is all anecdotal though, I'm rusty on my tank math since I shelved the big guy.

1.7 speed is the norm for many tank weapon right now. sun eater, king's defender, Mallet of the tides. Faster weapon speed means faster spams of heroic strike, but to fast means heroic strike is minimized. To slow and the same effect seems to occure.

I am no math wizard on it either, but at the end of the day you can tank with almost anything one handed. When i think about a tank weapon i think "how will this help me mitigate damage?" After that everything else is bonus material.

low rage situations i prefer a slow weapon.
high rage situations, i prefer a fast weapon.

slow weapon = better devistate
fast weapon = more heroic strikes.

and daggers are not the ideal tanking weapon because of normalization. but because of our low AP (400-500), we dont notice it as much as a dps warrior would (2000+ AP)

Okay.
With how hard bosses hit in T6+ content, you will want a fast weapon almost exclusively. They will easily fill up half or more of your rage bar in one hit.

I personally can't wait to get the 1.5 speed sword (which also has haste) from Kalecgos. Mmmmm...almost makes me wish I were human. Okay, it does. :/

Because I love story time - I gotta tell this tale. :D

A few weeks ago, I headed into KZ on my tank with my guildies. Our pally chose to tank Curator, and I changed into DPS gear to "have a discussion" with the sparks and old Curator himself. Running around like a drunken monkey, I rarely see great DPS numbers on Eaton - doesn't help I'm heavy Prot spec'd. But, I've tried hard to get a decent DPS set to help on fights like this and Aran.

So, Curator goes all nutters - I run over with a full rage bar and pop Recklessness followed by an Execute. The biggest number I've ever seen pops up over Curator's head - I giggle. At this point - he hits me with hateful bolt, my rage bar goes full and I hit him with Execute again. A bigger number popped up. I then giggled so maniacally over TS - the MT said very quietly "Quin, hon... uh... did you just kill a puppy?" One of the other raid members said "No, if you were paying any attention to the DPS meter - she spike so hard I thought she was a warlock." It was glorious.

And it makes me miss the old DPSFuryWarrior days *CRY*

That said, I gotta say thanks to Cat for the suggestions on good DPS gear at this level. I may be prot, but I can do enough DPS I don't feel like I'm gimping the raid when I need to dish a little damage :D

Personally I like 1.6 or 1.7 speed tanking weapons; my theory being I do enough button mashing at it is, it's nice to queue up Heroic the same time I'm hitting my next other agro generating ability instead of having to stagger them.

dps on a weapon I've found basically negligent. Give me tanking stats(def, dodge, stam, etc) or agro generation stats (hit, expertise) they make a much larger difference to my abilities as a tank.

I tanked a long time with a 2.6 off hand dps axe... best tanking weapon I've ever used actually. But that was a >25% boost compared to my backup in just raw white damage threat (and I didn't have shield slam so my primary tool was MS or BT). I've also used a dagger as a special purpose weapon - I put a weapon chain on malch actually, but no longer have it since the change to disarm mechanics. For such a rare case I just used what I had as my dps off hand (its not an ideal dps off hand either, but it was what I had access to at the time, random drops being... random). So in summary... there is no right/wrong answer, you should just be aware of the mechanics of each type of item. Yes, you are making your raid work harder by having a non-optimal weapon, but I assume if that is dictated by bad luck on drops... there is not much that can be done until the stuff drops. By the stuff I mean... mallet of the tides, the axe from zuljin, the sword from heroic mech, or the kings defender. The mace from heroic ramps and the blue quest axe from SMV would also be in the mix somewhere. Other superior alternatives that aren't designed for tanking would be the bug penis mace from hoofhead, the prince's axe (great for pulling btw, I use that to help initial threat before switching to a real weapon sometimes), and the huge ass rogue sword from morogrim.

My old standby tank weapon is the kings defender, though I"ve started to try tanking with Malch. Haven't noticed much difference, but I did get a slight increase in TPS when using the dagger. AT the moment, it's my best weapon since I haven't had any luck getting a mallet of the tides. I've tried tanking with dragonstrike, but it's way too slow to lock in aggro so I only use it when out farming or on the rare occasion I get to DPS. When I do DPS, I'm finding I can put out some very respectful numbers.

Even just by looking at tanking weapons available, 1.6-1.7 seems to be the norm these days. Though up to 2.0 is certainly usable (*hugs Quel'serrar* Any excuse to use you.)
And outside of hit and expertise, dps stats are pretty pointless. The tanking specified weapons blizz has thrown out these last patches got everything in the right order it seems.

Only exception I can think of is multi-target tanking. I've read up and tried out multi-mob 5-man stuff using Drakefist Hammer and it made things a little simpler. The difference was marginal and you have to do a couple things differently or else faster is better. So slower isn't better in that situation as much as it just becomes more doable. Faster and tank designed is better.

That shouldn't be the case. Malchazeen has 8 white DPS (including its AP) on KD. KD on the other hand, with 1000 buffed AP as an example, will devastate for 44 more damage. KD also has 2 more hit rating and can obviously put out more/faster heroic strikes. I'd say any supposed threat increase you see with Malchazeen is purely coincidental unless you are completely rage-starved.
