I have been looking up some different tables listing stuff about spirit vs. mana per 5 and I was just wondering what peoples opinion is for one vs the other on a priest. I myself have tried to get a decent amount of mana per 5 through the primal mooncloth and whitemend sets amongst other things. But from some of the things I have looked at I am thinking I should switch out a little bit of my mana per 5 stuff for more spirit. So let me know what you think is better or if I should just try to have an even mix. -Boris |

Spirit gives you some mana regen - Ratings Buster is the mod you're looking for if you don't have it already. It'll give you the nitty gritty on an item and tell you if its truly an upgrade.

I think the decision between the two (and both are good choices) largely depends on your build. if you're specced to get the different healing bonuses from spirit, and increased mana regen while casting, I think Spirit is better. if you prefer a deeper holy build, mana/5 might be better. Of course, some of it also depends on your playstyle, and matter preference:)

I have to agree with what was said above. Mana/5 and spirit depend greatly on spec, build and amounts. Ratings buster will definitely help you translate, though there was a priest forum somewhere that I read once upon a time that had even THAT depends on how often you're in the 5 second rule and what kind of trinkets you have etc. For instance, my priest runs with bangle and blue dragon, which is 15% more regen while casting and 100% regen while casting. Thus, having super awesome spirit is a plus, while still obtaining as much mp5 as possible. But for someone that uses all +healing or mana/5 trinkets with just meditation may not value spirit as highly, or a flash healing priest who is most likely never out of the 5 second rule as a Gheal canceler may be more often. Anyway, so of course it's dependant on everything you do as a healer. Yes, I know that probably doesn't help you as much as I wish I could. Good luck!

if you spam flash heal (you should NOT do this, as it's the sign of a priest who thinks they're a paladin - ie a noob) then mp5 is where it's at if your primary spell is greater heal, and instants (prayer of mending/renew) then you want to start looking to build up spirit as you're getting out of kara and into SSC/TK --

I used to be heavy into mp5, putting it in every slot I could get. Then I decided that spirit was just better and I picked up the trinket from Botanica that can proc the 15% mana regen while casting for X amount of time (and has a spirit bonus clicky). I also picked up, and am still using, the blue dragon card. The blue dragon card continues to scale w/u as your gear gets better, thus the the card gets better with every upgrade you get that has more spirit on it. With the changes to meditation spirit has also gotten a heavier hitting in the mana regen field. The only downside is that with 2.3 mp5 is still undercosted in ilevel vs. spirit. I'm still a spirit fan for the simple fact the talents in holy increase my healing with the more spirit I have and with my blue dragon card procs I gain more from it while I gain nothing from mp5 w/the blue dragon. In 2.4 however intellect effects how much mana you regen from each point of spirit. I don't know the calculations but I'd imagine spirit will become much better then mp5, at least in my book. --

The formula for calculating your O5SR regen contribution from spirit in terms of mp5 is 5 * 0.0093271 * Spirit * Square_root ( Intellect ) Calculating this out, it means that at: 74 int = equal item budget of spirit and mp5 (2.5spi:1mp5) are equivalent regen outside the 5SR 460 int = spirit and mp5 are equivalent regen outside the 5SR 818 int = equal item budget of spirit and mp5 (2.5spi:1mp5) are equivalent regen inside the 5SR 5108 int = spirit and mp5 are equivalent regen inside the 5SR When deciding, calculate based on raid-buffed int, rather than solo int. Also, this calculation is based off the fact that every priest has the 30% regen from Meditation. If you have more (from Primal Mooncloth, Darkmoon Card:Blue Dragon, Bangle of Endless Blessings, etc.) or bonus spirit (from Spirit of Redemption or The Human Spirit), your int values will be lower. If you have less regen, slap yourself and respec into 3/3 Meditation. :P The other thing to take into account is the fact that holy priests will get +healing from spirit with Spiritual Attunement, so that's another thing to consider. All things told, if given the choice between an item with mp5 and no spirit, and an item with spirit and no mp5, choose the latter in 99% of all cases. --

I go for a good mix of both and have gear sets tipping to one side or the other, speccd for SG and Meditation. The PMC set is good to start with, learn your conversions and then tinker with different gear, raid assignments you get, and encounter lengths and see what you feel you need more of after that. There is no true cookie cutter gear set up for any one priest (pre BC maybe but not now). |
