Mage Advice

Feral Dr00d!
Just wanted some advice on how to lvl my mage and what gear I should pick up for each spec.

Is arcane a decent way of lvling? Or should I stick with fire?

this is it for a winner!
Take Arcane Focus, drop Arcane Impact if you go that route. I don't personally suggest it.

Take Impact. Don't split points between Imp Fireball and Imp Scorch, pick one and focus on it. Flame Throwing is very nice, too. Ignite isn't necessary until your crit picks up.

Gear yourself in spelldamage gear. Blues with a good split of stats, and greens of Fiery Wrath.

I'd personally recommend Fire as a solid leveling spec. In order for arcane to be effective it often takes a certain amount/style of gear, whereas Fire tends to be rather simple. Sit at 41 yards, nuke, nuke, nuke, loot. Frost is also good, for the slowdown and surviveability.

I didn't take a close look at your talent selection, but overall impact is great for leveling. 10% chance to stun your target so you can cast un-interuptable is nice, and something you need sometimes while leveling fire, which doesn't have the surviveability of frost. Which means any talent that increases damage dealt is good for fire mages. Imp Scorch has limited uses, because you don't scorch while leveling much if at all.

That all being said, mages are good in the sense that all three schools are viable for leveling and raiding, each with their own strengths and weaknesses; the trick is to find the one that most appeals to you and do it.

I'm a fire mage. I leveled fire many moons ago, and loved it. Kahlil will always BE a fire mage, unless I'm in a fight where that needs to change, but that's a matter of personal taste. :P

I levelled up as fire and it went really well. I wasn't too impressed with the stun and never bothered.

If you go deep enough fire to use dragon breath, you wind up with 3 instant cast fire spells to nuke things that get too close (fire blast, dragon breath, and blast wave). And the 3 second disorient of DB is really nice to help finish things off that get too close.

Lol thanks. I'll see what I like and try it out. I asked about arcane cause I saw a crazy arcane mage 2 shot a demon in BEM 0.o

EDIT: Ok revised 31 build
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZxgMzbczo

Dropped Imp sorch for the range and thats it.

You're still early in the tree. One suggestion is getting 3/3 elemental precision. The Increased hit and minor mana cost reduction will really help. Its an important part of the most fire builds in later levels anyway.

I dont know how much you're running instancse at your level, but improved scorch is nice to get the debuff up and thenk finish off the (tanked) mob with fire balls. Starting out with fireballs often pulls agro and gets you dead.

On the other hand, for soloing, starting off with fireballs (or pyroblast) as an opener is great. You're deliberately pulling agro, with the intent to have the mob dead before it's in melee range, or before it can do much to you if its got ranged attacks.

Reducing the chance of a resist in that situation is a big help.
