So what Idol is better for kitty dps?

Everbloom Idol or Idol of Terror?

Instead of showing the macro name in the tooltip, it will show the tooltip for the first item or ability following the command listed in the macro. In the above cases, it would show the Healthstone or Healing potion you have listed. Just so you could see what you're doing.

For things like where you wanted to speak something before you used an ability like "*name* uses Frenzied Regneration!" you'd be able to see the tooltip for Frenzied Regeneration as if you had moused over the actual move.

This is not incredibly useful most of the time (especially if you use an addon like TheoryCraft to give you detailed spell information in tooltips). However, the #showtooltip command allows you to specify a spell to use in the tooltip the same way as #show. If you use #showtooltip, you do not need to use #show.

If you're happy with the spell that WoW is choosing for the feedback, you can use #showtooltip without a spell to save space in your macro. WoW will still use whichever spell it was choosing before, but it will now show the tooltip info for that spell/item.

Please Note: unlike slash commands, #show and #showtooltip must be written in lower case letters.

[edited to answer "what does #showtooltip do"]

What's also very nice about #showtooltip is that it shows the associated cooldown for the linked ability. So #showtooltip Rip will have the button greyed out of you don't have any combo points on the target, or #showtooltip Super Healing Potion will show the 2 minute potion use cooldown. I find that to be very handy :)

I've been told Everbloom, but I don't have any proof.

For Cat I go with Everbloom idol. In a standard attack sequence you're going to be Shredding 2-3 times for every 1 time you use Mangle (even more if you have a bear tank and don't need to use mangle at all). That's 176-264 damage before crits within 1 attack cycle. -If- the Idol of Terror procs you get 65AP (which may last a couple yellow attacks and 6-8 white damage attacks, so roughly 50-80 damage before crits) and the increased crit chance (3%, 4%? Something like that) which could be an extra 20-30dps for 8 seconds, so 160-240 damage for a total of roughly 210-320 extra damage during an Idol of Terror proc. Those are -really- rough numbers, but eh, they'll work :) If Idol of Terror had a 100% proc rate then it may be more worthwhile, but it's more along the lines of a 50% proc rate, making 105-160 damage on average and the Everbloom Idol is a clear winner in that regards. Of course the numbers would change if you wanted to really break things down and work out the fine tuning of the crit% and everything else, and actually wanted accuracy ;)

Everbloom Idol or Idol of Terror?

Added info to first page, along with link to Dagris' rough numbers post.

I have a spreadsheet around here somewhere that has the agi to crit conversion formula...I'll see if I can find it.

Found it.

1 Agility = 0.04% Crit + 0.068% Dodge + 1 AttackPower + 2 Armor

So when the idol procs you get (for 10 seconds):

2.6% crit chance increase
71.5 attack power (can't forget the HotW modifier)
4.42% dodge
130 armor

It has an internal cooldown.

The proc rate for the Idol of Terror is estimated to be ~85% in cat and ~50% in bear.

As opposed to a consistent 88 to your shred every time. You can idol swap while you are fighting.

HOWEVER:
A) it causes a GCD
B) it can cause error spam (even when caught by spam sentry) that will bog you down and decrease your response time
C) it restarts your swing timer and eliminates an auto attack

All of which can negatively affect your DPS.

Personally, I'd run with Everbloom over Terror as a cat...in a group. Soloing, I'd take Terror.

......

Using Toskk's calculations (cuz I'm feeling lazy) and assuming no bear tank:

Plug in 3000 ap
35% crit
142 hit (eliminates misses)
91 expertise (eliminates dodge)
Not counting armor pen
Not counting 2 piece Malorne
Raid boss Attumen (since most can get to him easily enough for the most part)
Sunder Armor x5
FF selected
CoR selected

With Everbloom Idol = 824.91 dps
With Idol of Terror = 817.71 dps

This, of course, is assuming you are able to be consistently behind your target - like you can with Attumen.

Toskk's calculator does not take into account not using shred - which can significantly impact your dmg. So this would assume the difference in rotation between one cat spamming mangle-shred-shred-rip with Everbloom on and the other spamming mangle-shred-shred-rip with Idol of Terror on...both behind the target.

---

If you are on a boss that constantly moves and you find you can never get a shred off, or rarely get one off - so you find yourself spamming mangle...it would probably be best to switch out idols for that fight. However - this is a huge however...do not macro idol swaps based on your special.

Example: slot idol of terror to mangle, and then change to everbloom to shred.

This may seem like a great idea at first glance. However....

Remember - every time you swap an idol (even if you do it right after an attack to mitigate the GCD issue, and have no error spam) you lose an auto attack. This, effectively, removes 2 auto attacks per cycle. So 2 auto attacks erased every 12-15 seconds. In a 5 minute boss fight with 3000 ap (not counting potential crits), that's 8560-10700 dmg (28.53-35.6 dps) lost from "free" attacks.

That's a significant cut to your dps and is not made up for or exceeded by the benefit of idol swapping. Even with the temporary crit increase from the mangle proc, your crits will not cover your dmg lost. They might get close, but...inevitably, due to the swing timer reset and the GCD ...you would lose dps.

And a final note, if you are using mangle while there's a bear tank present and you aren't having issues getting behind your target...I'm gonna be really confused *grins*

This is an extremely informative post. Thanks alot for taking the time to write this all out Kre.=) I hope other knowledgeable folks in other classes will do the same. This kinda stuff is great for new people. And for some of us others not so new folks who don't know anything about druids. Makes me want to start messing around with my little baby 32 druid.;)

THANK YOU!!!!

I'm so bad at keeping my notes sometimes and having a wonderful collection of information such as this is not only handy but certainly encouraging towards retuning things.

I'm sure Mihos and/or others might know, but what of general mp5 rates and other tips towards boomkin use would be worthwhile beyond the +hit to spells already presented?

You are very welcome. I'm glad you find it helpful. *grins* I know nothing much about Boomkin or Trees. I'm a bad dr00d. *hangs head* I would totally have posted about them; but, I just really haven't dug that deep into those specs, as my focus has been on feral. ((edit: renamed to "Some Basics (Feral)"))

I should rename this to "Some Feral Basics" - and maybe someone who knows the other two can put together a good post for those?

I'm sure he could, as could Ardence, Kaug or Sefonial.

But I did not want to volunteer or point to anyone and suggest they do it...since I do not know what kind of time or inclination they have :-)

Since I have been unable to play this last week, I got my WoW fix (basically) by pulling my notes together and posting this ;-)
