How to Blacksmith

Disclaimer: I R NUB

As I'm working my warrior up, this is another thing that I've been considering and having some difficulty with.

I REALLY don't expect the warrior to be doing much raiding (maybe KZ and ZA, but..i sorta doubt it.) I'm designing her to be able to do instances and heroics. If she raids, it's likely to be 'fill in', but we'll see.

Back on topic. Warrior is a blacksmith. She's not very far along yet, but about to the point of choosing weaponsmith vs armorsmith. I'm not powerleveling it at this point, and most of the ore I mine is actually going towards AH for making money.

Most people I've spoken with briefly about it, seem to think that armorsmith isn't as good as weaponsmithing. Past that weaponsmithing has further specializations.

So...the questions:

What are some good guides to look at?

One guide that I'm reading notes that once you pick a specialization, you're locked to it for good, even after abandoning the profession and retaking it. Is this true still?

What are your general thoughts on specializations? Even more specifically for weaponsmiths, are the specializations within that notably different based upon whether swords, axes, or hammers are chosen?

My warrior alt is a tank. Period. Does the specialization chosen heavily impact that role, as opposed to DPS?

You can change your specialization easily, it just costs you each time.

I've done all three weaponsmithings and I'm currently an armorsmith.

Okay.
I also switched to armorsmith after first being mace (didn't like the proc rate on the 1H) and axe. The thing about the weapons is they're only equivalent to T5 at their final upgrades, whereas the breastplate is equivalent to T6. They could add more upgrades later though...who knows?

If you're not even planning to do KZ, the 1H sword is a nice tank weapon. The armor is also decent for tanking but more on the DPS side.

I was looking at the axesmith stuff, compared to the sword and hammer too (Thus far, my alt has been very into axes). It seems insanely gimped compared to sword/mace, but maybe I'm looking at the wrong things.

At least I can change. And T5/T6 stuff doesn't help me a ton with this alt unless I go raiding anyways to get the nether vortexes, so I don't think I will be considering THAT high end of any specialty. Who knows, though. I didn't think I'd like healing either.

Okay.
Axe and mace are about equal for DPS. I'd shy away from either for tanking though.
