Question as 3rd tank on Gruul

Last week I was the 3rd tank on Gruul.

Meaning I was getting no MDs, and if everything went well I would never be hit by Gruul.

One of the attempts I was in my DPS gear. Now I still had 490+ defense but I took a good sized hit to my HP. On the plus side Devastate spam seemed to be keeping me right up there on the threat list.

So...which do I do--generate high threat on a weaker tank who should be able to keep most of the melee alive on Gruul--but be easier to kill--or keep my grade a tanking gear on and watch the meleer's get wtfbbqpwnd until the hunter MD rotation can push me up on the threat list?

It would seem to me that if you're called into rotation, it's likely to be later in the fight, when he's gone through at least half of his 'Grow' cycles. When a tank goes down, and you're needed, I would expect that you'd really be needed in your full tanking gear in order to give a chance at surviving the remainder of the fight.

Here's the catch on that--is by the time, as third tank, I get agro, lots to all the melee types will be dead putting our DPS into toilet. Which is also not good.

Did you intervene the MT?

As soon as that first tank is dead, you should be the only melee in range of him...

ie. the melee dps should be running for the walls until you get your threat.

Also, by the time you are called into play, he's going to be several grows into the cycle and will hit like a mofo - yes...be in your tanking gear.

Sab - yes, the OTs both do intervene on the MT during the Gruul fight.

Damn I just saw this. Tritary tank needs to be in full tank gear to save our bacon in case MT or OT dies. Rogues are supposed to bail if one if those two die until hunters can get the tritary tank up on the threat meter. I believe it was midi whom saved our bacon one time through this method.

Duel wielding until MT or OT is the way to go while in tank gear in battlestance.

Actually I generate better agro in Defensive, spamming Devastate.

this is it for a winner!
You would really handwave away losing 65% threat generation as a "different stroke"?

Defensive stance. No contest.

A rogue with good timing can evade through a strike or two. If you have some with Rasuvious experience, then use that before they vanish. Especially during that last 5 percent worth of "Wow. People suddenly start falling like bowling pins" stage.

Oh for the love of god i put battlestance ><

Yes defensive sorry.

Edit: I ment the hand wave for devistate. Other then upping the DPS a touch I have never been overly imprtessed with it. I only recently respeced it back in to try it out again. previously i did not have it at all.

The problem is that sunder is still more threat per rage point (talented) even though it is less threat per hit. However, I like to chip in damage as well, not because I like being at 200 dps (woo!) but because there is a razor thin margin on these fights and that 50k damage difference over the course of the fight may be what gets us the kill (40k short on void reaver a few weeks back). Anyhow, you can still deva spam while dual wielding, and you should be generating way more rage. That said, I usually use the autoblocker and slam a ton along with deva spam and buff/debuff maintenance so the tank doesn't have to - I'd rather they are looking at their hp and hovering over last stand than trying to get a demo shout to stick. /ramble on

As I read that 2.3 note, Devastate becomes Sunder Armor for the prot set, so, if I read it right, Devastate both applies Sunders and gains benefits from Imp Sunder--so that it should be better threat per rage too.

And we get an extra button back too, if that is true.

If that is true Guthammer then my respecing it in for experimenting might prove worthwhile.

And midi originally I respeced it back into my tree to the minimalist DPS increase on your recomendation to try it out.

Assuming they actually fix Devastate. Atm, on the PTR, devastate generates less threat than Sunder, so even at the same rage cost, sunder is more threat per rage.

I hope they fix it. Even would make me happy, I don't need it to generate more, but by god at least make that damn skill useful in situations where you don't have unlimited rage.
